Of the 6 million people in Honduras: 80% live in poverty and 60% live in rural areas.

The northeastern third of Honduras has very few roads where many live in isolated villages and towns connected only by boat, plane or footpath.  These areas, with heavy tropical rains, can be impassable

for weeks, even months at a time.  Due to these factors many people have little to no access to health care.

This has resulted in a high mortality rate in newborns and children.  Diseases such as HIV, malaria, dengue, TB and diarrheas are steadily increasing with the absence of preventative health care.
